Description

Select Mint State 1889 Double Eagle
None Certified as MS64 or Better

1889 $20 MS63 PCGS. From 1881 to 1887, the double eagle mintages at Philadelphia were either proof-only or purely nominal. While 1888 saw the return to a six-figure mintage, in 1889 business strike production took a step back to just 44,070 pieces. This is among the highest-quality survivors available, a lightly patinated apricot-gold piece with straw accents to the luminous cartwheels that slowly sweep across satiny surfaces. Light abrasions on Liberty's face and hair contribute to the grade, yet the overall visual appeal is solid. A small coppery area is noted to the left of Liberty's nose. Population: 20 in 63, 0 finer (9/12).
