Description

1889 Double Eagle, Select Uncirculated
None Certified in MS64 or Higher

1889 $20 MS63 PCGS. From 1881 to 1887, double eagle mintages at Philadelphia were either proof-only or purely nominal. While the year 1888 saw a return to a six-figure mintage, business strike production took a step back to just 44,070 pieces in 1889. This is among the highest-quality survivors, an apricot-gold representative with straw accents and luminous mint frost that softly cartwheels over each side. Light abrasions on Liberty's face and hair contribute to the grade, yet the overall visual appeal is excellent. Population: 31 in 63 (1 in 63+), 0 finer (11/17).
