Description

1889 Twenty Dollar, MS63
Registry-Grade Example

1889 $20 MS63 PCGS. Throughout the decade of the 1880s and into the early 1890s, official policy was to produce limited numbers of double eagles at the Philadelphia Mint, to encourage the circulation of smaller denomination gold coins. The San Francisco Mint continued to strike large mintages of double eagles throughout this time frame, to take up the slack. Accordingly, only 44,070 Liberty double eagles were struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1889, and the issue is scarce in all grades today.

Relatively high-grade examples, like this attractive Select specimen, are rare. The design elements of this piece are sharply detailed throughout, and the lustrous orange-gold surfaces show only minor signs of contact. The eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 31 in 63 (1 in 63+), 0 finer (2/18).(Registry values: N4719)
