Description

1889 Double Eagle, MS63
Low Mintage Philadelphia Issue

1889 $20 MS63 PCGS. The production of double eagles at the Mint was famously slow during much of the 1880s, although output picked up in 1888. It died down again in 1889, when only 44,070 twenties were struck. The present coin is about as fine as any 1889s that are available for collectors. Moreover, the MS63 grade is seldom exceeded at either PCGS or NGC. This lustrous orange-gold MS63 example displays a scattering of reddish alloy spots among the original, sharply struck elements. Marks and abrasions are few on the colorful and well-patinated surfaces. PCGS lists only one numerically finer example plus two in 63+ (4/24).(Registry values: N4719)
