Description

1889 Double Eagle, MS63
Attractive Grade Rarity

1889 $20 MS63 PCGS. Ex: The Peh Family Collection. Collectors of Liberty double eagles know that Philadelphia Mint issues from the 1880s rank among the toughest in the series. Three dates (the 1883, 1884, and 1887) are proof-only, and four others have mintages of less than 2,200 pieces (the 1881, 1882, 1885, and 1886). The remaining three dates are scarce in Mint State, but nonetheless collectible. The mintage of 44,070 pieces ensures that the 1889 is rare in Select condition, since most Uncirculated survivors are thoroughly abraded by their bag stored peers. This lustrous and nicely struck apricot-gold example shows the expected light obverse marks when it is tilted beneath a light, but is attractive for the grade because no singular marks distract. PCGS Population: 39 in 63 (2 in 63+), 2 finer (8/25).
