Description

1889-CC Twenty, MS61
Low-Mintage Carson City Issue

1889-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. The death of Carson City Mint Superintendent James Crawford on March 8, 1885, saw a series of interrelated events, beginning with Carson City striking only silver dollars and double eagles in 1885. The mint produced no more coinage until 1889, when it again struck only silver dollars and double eagles. The meager total of 30,945 double eagles made is less than one-tenth that for the 350,000 1889-CC Morgan dollars. Nonetheless perhaps 3%-4% of the 1889-CC twenties survive today, making them among the more available CC-mint issues, while still rare above MS62. This MS61 example offers excellent eye appeal for the grade, showing deep orange-gold color, gorgeous luster, and a bold strike. Scattered bagmarks account for the grade, as expected on these large, soft gold coins.(Registry values: N2998)
