Description

1889-CC Double Eagle, MS61
Charm of the Old West

1889-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. This cataloger recently visited Carson City and nearby Virginia City, Nevada, and witnessed the charm of the old west that is represented by this lovely Mint State double eagle. Virginia City, especially, retains much of its authentic historic charm. The Carson City Mint produced 30,945 double eagles in 1889, all from a single die pair. Mint State survivors are elusive, with just 140 such pieces certified by PCGS, and more than half of those grading just MS60 or MS61. That service has only examined 63 coins in higher grades, including 56 that grade MS62, six in MS63, and a single MS64. This lovely example has brilliant and fully lustrous mint frost with scattered marks primarily on the obverse. The reverse, if graded separately, would likely enjoy an MS63 assessment. According to the PCGS Price Guide, MS62 examples are priced 50% higher than MS61, and MS63 are double the MS61 price. This example that is graded MS61 provides an excellent combination of grade and price.(Registry values: N2998)
