Description

1889-CC Twenty Dollar, MS62
Tied for Finest With CAC Approval
Frosty With Red-Gold Accents

1889-CC $20 MS62 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Rian's Bequest. Back in 2003, Rusty Goe estimated that 175 to 195 examples of the 1889-CC double eagle (30,945 coins struck) survived in Mint State. However, as recently as 2020 (based on information from 2018), he revised his estimate down to just 90 to 110 coins. The revelation is surprising considering the discoveries of several caches of CC gold over the last fifteen years, but the 1889-CC was not one of the affected issues. If anything, those finds have only served to confirm the rarity of this date, particularly in high grades.

This gorgeous Carson City twenty exhibits smooth honey-gold surfaces with pleasing reddish accents. Frosty mint luster is minimally affected by small ticks and grazes that are undeniably minimal for the grade. Remarkably attractive for the issue and clearly high-end, approaching the finest available representatives in terms of visual and technical quality. PCGS reports nine numerically finer submissions. CAC: 4 in 62, 0 finer (11/21).
