Description

Exceptional 1889-CC Double Eagle, MS62

1889-CC $20 MS62 PCGS. Despite its minuscule mintage of 30,945 pieces, the 1889-CC double eagle is considered to be among the more available Carson City twenties. Douglas Winter (2001) attributes this to the release of a significant hoard(s) during the mid-1990s.
PCGS and NGC have certified several hundred '89-CC examples, mostly in the XF40 to AU58 grade range. Mint State specimens are more difficult to come by. The two services combined have seen about 180 Uncirculated coins, primarily in MS60 to MS62 condition. Higher-grade pieces are virtually unobtainable.
The present MS62 twenty displays pretty greenish-gold patina and pleasing luster. The latter attribute is especially significant as most examples show only average luster (see Winter, p. 187). A well executed strike delivers strong definition to the design elements, including the dentilation from 5 to 7 o'clock on the obverse and TWENTY DOLLARS on the reverse, areas that are often weak. Only the upper two or three obverse stars reveal the usual softness. A few minor grazes limit the grade. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 51 in 62, 6 finer (7/09).(Registry values: N4719)
