Description
1889-S Double Eagle, MS64+
Very Nearly Gem Quality
1889-S $20 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. Prior to the discovery of the
Saddle Ridge Hoard, this Plus-graded MS64 example of the 1889-S
double eagle was outpaced only by two MS65 coins at NGC. The hoard
yielded several hundred representatives of the date, most being in
MS63 or lower grades, but five Gem examples were recovered and
certified by PCGS, these now being the only coins at that service
that are numerically finer than this piece (9/14). Glowing mint
frost in shades of honey and yellow-gold engulfs each side,
exhibiting only a few faint luster grazes on Liberty's cheek. The
design elements are sharply defined, contributing to the overall
intense visual appeal. Population: 71 in 64 (17 in 64+), 5 finer
(9/14).(Registry values: N7079)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26BW, PCGS# 9012, Greysheet# 9946)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
