Description

1889-S Double Eagle, MS65
Tied for Finest Certified
Frosty and Unblemished

1889-S $20 MS65 NGC. The 1889-S was unknown in Gem Uncirculated condition until recently, after discovery of the Saddle Ridge Hoard in February 2013. Of the 353 1889-S twenties found in that fascinating grouping, 12 Gem Mint State coins have been certified by PCGS and NGC combined (nine at NGC). While there is no pedigree identifier on the NGC insert, we believe this is a Saddle Ridge coin due both to its lofty grade and bright, Mint-fresh appearance -- characteristic of the Saddle Ridge provenance. In any case, this is a magnificent 1889-S twenty that even exceeds the stated grade for eye appeal, exhibiting smooth, virtually unblemished surfaces. Mint luster rolls across each side and is noticeably frosted. The strike is sharp in all areas. This coin makes a nearly unimprovable example of the Type Three design and is sure to highlight any advanced collection of late 1800s double eagles. NGC Census: 9 in 65, 0 finer (1/25).(Registry values: N1)
