Description
1890 Double Eagle, MS64
Just Two Finer at NGC
1890 $20 MS64 NGC. Rich yellow-gold coloration is infused
into the planchet at the most fundamental level, as is the buoyant
and original cartwheel luster. Rose gold highlights are
interspersed throughout. All details are intricately defined on
both the obverse and the reverse. Abrasions are few and far
between, with fields cleaner than are found on almost all examples
of this issue. The culprit is primarily a very low mintage, with
just 75,940 double eagles leaving the Philadelphia Mint in 1890,
leaving few opportunities for superlative examples to survive.
However, the present example is certainly an exception, with just
two equivalent and two finer certifications at NGC. Census: 3 in
64, 2 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N1)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26BX, PCGS# 9013, Greysheet# 9825)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
