Description

1890-S Twenty, Conditionally Rare MS64
Pleasing Eye Appeal

1890-S $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1890-S double eagle sports a relatively high mintage exceeding 800,000 pieces. Large numbers were shipped abroad for international trade, and many have been returning to the States in recent decades. The Mint State population is enough to satisfy collector demand, at least through MS63. Near-Gems are quite elusive, however, and higher-grade specimens are very rare. In fact, PCGS and NGC have certified a mere two pieces finer than MS64!

The present near-Gem offering displays pleasing luster and a subtle mix of yellow-gold, reddish-gold, and apricot. Boldly struck, and close examination reveals just a few minute marks that preclude Gem classification. The new owner will be very pleased with the overall quality of this piece. Population: 19 in 64, 1 finer (3/13).
