Description

1890-S Twenty Dollar, MS65+
Former Finest-Known Example

1890-S $20 MS65+ PCGS. Nearly 100 1890-S double eagles were unearthed as part of the amazing Saddle Ridge Hoard, including two MS66 coins (one with the Plus designation, one without) that were certified by PCGS. Those exceptional examples surpassed the present Gem coin that had previously laid claim to the top spot in the population (by virtue of its Plus-graded status).

While the Saddle Ridge Hoard coins are without doubt impressive, this remarkable coin retains the qualities that for many years set the bar high for technical merit and original appeal. Rich honey-gold patina embraces both sides of the coin, which are for all purposes unmarked and radiantly lustrous. The strike is complete, bolstered by fields that gleam with semiprooflikeness. It remains as the finest non-Saddle Ridge example. Population (non-Saddle Ridge): 3 in 65 (1 in 65+), 0 finer (10/15).(Registry values: N1)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26BZ, PCGS# 9015, Greysheet# 9948)

Weight: 33.44 grams
