    1891 Double Eagle, AU50
    An Important Low-Mintage Issue

1891 $20 AU50 NGC. Only 1,390 circulation-strike double eagles were coined at the Philadelphia Mint in 1891. Few coins were saved at the time of issue, as most advanced collectors apparently preferred to simply purchase a proof from the Mint. Modern numismatists now realize the importance and rarity of this issue, as probably fewer than 100 examples are known in all grades. NGC has seen only 37 pieces through MS63.

This AU50 example displays reddish-gold surfaces with traces of luster in the recessed areas. The design elements are well-struck, and both sides reveal just a few light circulation marks. This is a pleasing example of this rare issue. Census: 1 in 50, 28 finer (11/13).
