Description
1891 Double Eagle, AU55
Only 1,390 Coins Struck
1891 $20 AU55 NGC. After minuscule production totals through
the early-to-mid-1880s, Philadelphia double eagle output rebounded
in 1888. It fell again to modest levels in 1889 and 1890 before
plummeting once more in 1891, when only 1,390 coins were
manufactured in circulation-strike format. Although not specially
made, they were all struck from freshly polished dies. The degree
of contrast seen here between the fields and devices is not
uncommon for the issue. Yellow-gold surfaces exhibit strong detail.
Tiny marks are scattered over each side. Census: 11 in 55, 19 finer
(6/23).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26C2, PCGS# 9016, Greysheet# 9826)
Weight: 33.44 grams
