Description

1891 Twenty Dollar Liberty, AU58
Low-Mintage Philadelphia Rarity

1891 $20 AU58 PCGS Secure. The year 1891 was another for low double eagle coinage at Philadelphia. Only 1,390 pieces were struck, compared to nearly 1.3 million coins at San Francisco. Carson City contributed a token quantity of 5,000 coins. Gold deposits during this period exceeded 3.2 million standard ounces, or more than $59 million -- an increase of about $10.3 million over the previous year. Most of what was later manufactured into federal coinage was in the form of double eagles, but once again the San Francisco Mint produced the bulk of the coinage.

Surviving examples of the low-mintage 1891 Philadelphia issue are scarce with only 100 coins believed known. Uncirculated examples are rare, and high-end AU coins are only a trifle more available. This Choice AU piece is sharp and prooflike, showing warm honey-gold color. A few small reed marks on Liberty's cheek and in the upper-left obverse field are the only mentionable abrasions. Population: 11 in 58, 6 finer (9/18).(Registry values: N4719)
