Description
1891 Double Eagle, Reflective AU58
Low-Mintage Philadelphia Key
1891 $20 AU58 PCGS Secure. Gold deposits at the Mint and its
branches increased slightly in 1891 over those of the previous two
years. Bullion largely came from domestic mines, either in the form
of privately refined bars or in unrefined ore. Much of this bullion
was refined and coined into eagles and double eagles for Pacific
Coast depositors. As such, the bulk of the coinage occurred at the
San Francisco Mint. For the calendar year 1891, San Francisco
struck more than 1.28 million double eagles, while Carson City
struck 5,000 pieces and Philadelphia just 1,390. The latter issue
is a rarity among Type Three double eagles today, with a
survivorship estimated by PCGS at about 100 coins. This near-Mint example displays prooflike fields and rich honey-gold coloration. Although a touch of light high-point friction is observed over the high points of the devices, neither side exhibits the heavy abrasions that are often associated with AU-level Liberty Head twenties. This piece is eye-appealing and it is rare so fine. Only a handful of Uncirculated pieces survive finer. Population: 11 in 58, 6 finer (11/18).(Registry values: N4719)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26C2, PCGS# 9016, Greysheet# 9826)
