Reflective 1891 Double Eagle, XF451891 $20 XF45 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint only struck 1,442 double eagles in 1891, a figure that includes 52 proof coins. It is a rarity in all grades. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth write in Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933: "Modern numismatists now realize the importance and rarity of many previously overlooked Philadelphia issues. The 1891 double eagle is a prime example. Of the 1,390 circulation-strike coins, there are probably fewer than 100 known in all grades."
Like most, this Choice XF has brilliant yellow surfaces that are partially prooflike. Both sides have the usual quota of minor abrasions, but none are significant. This pleasing piece will be an excellent addition to an advanced cabinet of Liberty double eagles.
