Description

Exceptional 1891-CC Twenty Dollar, AU58

1891-CC $20 AU58 NGC. The mintage of the 1891-CC double eagle (5,000 pieces) is among the lowest for any Carson City issue. Despite its low mintage, the date can be located in Very Fine to Extremely Fine condition without too much trouble. About Uncirculated pieces are scarce, though the relatively high certified population of AU55s and AU58s likely results from resubmissions. Mint State pieces are very rare, with none grading higher than MS63.
This near-Mint State specimen retains considerable luster exuding from its yellow-gold surfaces. The design features are well impressed, except for the usual weakness in the first four obverse stars. Perhaps the most outstanding attribute of this coin, however, is that both sides are minimally abraded, which is very unusual for surviving examples. Douglas Winter (2001) writes:

"... this is one of the most heavily abraded of all Carson City gold coins (regardless of denomination) and any piece with only moderately abraded surfaces is in great demand."

Not only is this coin lightly abraded, it also lacks the copper spots and grease stains that are usually seen. We expect that this exceptional example will generate spirited bidding. Census: 68 in 58, 35 finer (10/09).(Registry values: N2998)
