Description

1891-CC Twenty, AU58
Attractive Reddish-Gold Color, Few Marks

1891-CC $20 AU58 PCGS. Winter 1-A. The sparse mintage of only 5,000 pieces is a good indication of the 1891-CC twenty's absolute as well as conditional rarity, although a comparatively high survival rate tempers the issue's scarcity to some extent. Carson City authority Rusty Goe notes the 1891-CC double eagle ranks as the third-rarest Carson City twenty behind the 1870-CC and 1871-CC issues. This near-Mint example retains almost complete mint luster and rich reddish-gold patina with minimal abrasions. The centers are sharply defined despite slight softness on the peripheral stars. All 1891-CC examples remain in strong demand among Carson City specialists. Legions of double eagle collectors consider this to be the key date among Type Three CC twenties. We expect spirited bidding when the lot is called. This coin remains housed in its PCGS Generation 4.0 holder (in use 1998 to early 2002) with its barcode on the back of the light-blue label.
