Description

1892 Double Eagle, MS64
Rare in This Grade
Only 4,430 Pieces Struck

1892 $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1892 double eagle comes from a sparse circulation strike mintage of 4,430 pieces and is considered a key date in the series. Garrett and Guth sum up the appeal of this business strike in their Encyclopedia of Gold Coins:

"Of those minted, just 150 to 200 coins remain. Many of the great collections assembled in the past did not have an example of a circulation-strike 1892 double eagle. The date was usually represented by Proof examples."

The P-mint Type Three double eagles include several low-mintage dates. A lengthy run of low double eagle Philadelphia production starts in the early 1880s and lasts through the 1892 issue, before returning to normalcy in 1893. The 1892 date is a conditionally scarce example even at the MS61 grade level, with each subsequent step up the PCGS grading ladder slipping to single-digit survivors. The low mintage assures no great influx of finer coins is likely to occur.

Smooth, attractive surfaces on this near-Gem example display natural, orange-gold color that deepens at a few high points. Frosted mint luster radiates from each side to illuminate a razor-sharp strike. A couple of obverse marks keep this piece apart from the full Gem Uncirculated category. Two thin abrasions exist in the left obverse field, including a scratch in the left obverse field between stars 3 and 5, and a a lesser mark from below star 4 to the Liberty's nose. Otherwise, a pair of light horizontal marks on the cheek represent the only additional marks of any consequence.

As its low mintage might suggest, the 1892 is rare in Mint State. PCGS and NGC have certified roughly 60 Uncirculated examples in total, some of which are undoubtedly resubmitted or crossover coins. The present near-Gem ranks among the finest PCGS-certified specimens behind a single MS67 Superb Gem. Peach-gold patina laced with hints of mint-green rests on its lustrous surfaces, and a solid strike provides bold definition on the design elements. PCGS Population: 4 in 64 (1 in 64+), 2 finer (1/25).(Registry values: N7079)
