Description
1892-CC Liberty Head Twenty, MS62
Prooflike Surfaces
1892-CC $20 MS62 NGC. Variety 1-A. The 1892-CC double eagle
boasts a mintage of 27,265 pieces, with perhaps 800-900 examples
surviving today in all grades. Thomas Elder called the issue
"VRare" in his sale of the Smith, Dickie and Other Collections
(Elder, 11/1935), lot 879. The date has appeared in several hoards
since Elder's day, becoming more available in circulated grades,
but Mint State examples remain quite scarce. The present coin displays bright semiprooflike fields on both sides, with a minimum number of handling marks for the grade. The surfaces are an attractive light reddish-gold. Sharply struck except for some peripheral weakness on the obverse stars. This example is sure to be popular with collectors of prooflike twenties. Census: 38 in 62, 5 finer (10/09).(Registry values: N4719)
