Remarkably Smooth Fields, Profuse Luster

1892-S $20 MS65 PCGS. Ex: D.L. Hansen Collection. It is true that thousands of 1892-S double eagles are known in Uncirculated grades. This San Francisco issue was widely used to purchase imported goods during the gold standard era, often ending up in foreign banks for decades, where the gold coins were indifferently stored as bullion reserves. After World War II, American coin dealers began to travel overseas and investigate bank holdings. Slowly, the coins returned to the United States, but by then most examples were in AU58 to MS63 grades. Gems constitute less than half of 1% of the certified population. This highly lustrous canary-gold representative is immeasurably nicer than the typical '92-S. The fields are remarkably smooth and lustrous, while even Liberty's cheek shows only a few delicate luster grazes. The coin is housed in a D.L. Hansen Collection holder.
