Description

1893-CC Double Eagle, MS62
Rare Any Finer

1893-CC $20 MS62 NGC. Variety 2-A. On this variety, which has the more common obverse paired with the issue's only reverse, the 9 in the date has its lower ball touching the upper loop, whereas on 1-A there is a tiny window of separation. Production of double eagles in 1893 was limited to just 18,402 pieces before the Carson City Mint, which had been mothballed for four years during Grover Cleveland's first term as president and reopened during Benjamin Harrison's presidency, closed for good soon after Cleveland's reinauguration. This unworn and broadly lustrous wheat-gold example is well-defined with a number of small abrasions and scrapes on the obverse but a cleaner reverse. Select and finer coins are condition rarities.
