Description

1893-CC Double Eagle, MS63
Vibrant Final-Year Carson City Twenty
None Finer at PCGS, Just One Finer at NGC

1893-CC $20 MS63 PCGS. Variety 2-A. The low mintage of just 18,402 pieces and the high production quality of this final-year Carson City issue appeal to virtually all double eagle collectors and Carson City specialists. The issue is readily available in high AU and low Mint State grades, but it is seldom seen any finer than MS62. This is the first MS63 example we have offered in nearly three years.

Sharply struck motifs and a dappled orange-gold patina give this Select Uncirculated example eye appeal that exceeds its numeric grade. A mere sprinkling of pinprick marks and faint, minor abrasions in the left obverse field are of little notice, as are one or two inconsequential bagmarks on the reverse. There is no copper spotting, as sometimes seen on the 1893-CC. PCGS has yet to certify a numerically finer piece, and one has to wonder if this example -- housed in a previous generation blue label PCGS holder with barcode on the back -- might be a candidate for an even finer grade. Population: 23 in 63, 0 finer (3/18).(Registry values: N4719)
