Description
1896 Double Eagle, MS65
Tied for Finest at PCGS
1896 $20 MS65 PCGS Secure. Ex: Chicago Classics. The rarity
of high-grade 1896 double eagles is often overlooked due to the
availability of coins in grades through MS64, as well as the
issue's substantial mintage of more than 792,000 pieces. In
reality, PCGS has encapsulated only six representatives at the MS65
level, with none numerically finer; NGC records just 11 coins in
this grade, with seven numerically finer (3/15). The present piece
displays well-struck design elements with deep orange-gold patina
over the satiny surfaces. Close study with a loupe finds a few
minute grazes on the cheek, not out of line for the grade.(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26CF, PCGS# 9029, Greysheet# 9831)
