Description
1897 Double Eagle, MS65
None Numerically Finer
1897 $20 MS65 PCGS. Frosted, finely grained surfaces radiate
vibrant, cartwheel mint luster to illuminate this fully struck, Gem
Uncirculated 1897 twenty. Splendid rose-gold accents enrich the
underlying orange-gold color for outstanding eye appeal.
Super-smooth fields show few imperfections of any kind, while
Liberty's portrait displays a rounded cheek with only two or three
tiny ticks and a bit of mint grime.Historically, the 1897 is known as one of the most-available Liberty double eagles, which is true up to the Select Uncirculated level. Near-Gem coins are seen on occasion, but full Gems remain stubbornly rare. Neither PCGS nor NGC has certified a single coin numerically finer than the MS65 level. This example is tied with eight other Gems at PCGS. Finding one finer will be a difficult task. Population: 9 in 65 (1 in 65+), 0 finer (4/19).(Registry values: N4719)
