Description

1897-S $20 MS64 NGC. CAC. This historic double eagle issue was made at the peak of the Klondike Gold Rush, which would continue into 1898. Bowers conjectures that many of the 1897-S double eagles were made from freshly mined Klondike gold. This near-Gem is seldom bettered conditionally, as Gems are quite elusive, despite the mintage of 1.47 million coins. It is a well- but not fully struck piece, with scattered minor abrasions away from the prime focal areas and lovely orange-gold color. NGC has certified only 19 pieces finer (6/10).(Registry values: N2998)
