1897-S Liberty Head Double Eagle, MS64+
Sharp Strike, Nice Color
1897-S $20 MS64+ NGC. CAC. The 1897-S Liberty Head double
eagle was produced in large numbers, but the issue circulated
widely, so high grade coins are seldom encountered today. Choice
specimens can be located without too much difficulty, but only 26
coins have been certified in grades above MS64 by NGC and PCGS
combined (8/10). The present coin has lovely yellow-gold surfaces,
accented by rose color and strong mint luster. The strike is
extraordinary, with pinpoint detail on all devices. A scattering of
minor abrasions , including a long scrape below the date, is
consistent with the grade. The high-end status of this piece is
confirmed by the plus designation.(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26CJ, PCGS# 9032, GSID# 9958)
