Description
Wonderful Gem 1897-S Double Eagle
1897-S $20 MS65 NGC. Garrett and Guth write of this issue at the MS64 level: "Choice examples are scarce, but they are a bit more readily available than some of the San Francisco issues of the last few years." One grading point higher, in MS65 territory, and the 1897-S double eagle becomes a condition rarity. This well-defined example is particularly endearing, with strong yellow-gold luster that shows undercurrents of orange. A small alloy spot appears above Liberty's hair bun, but neither side shows any individually mentionable marks. NGC has graded only one numerically finer example (8/09).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26CJ, PCGS# 9032, Greysheet# 9958)
