Description

1897-S Double Eagle, MS65
Just a Single Coin Finer at NGC

1897-S $20 MS65 NGC. Double eagle mintages at the West Coast branch mint typically remained within the range of 1 million to 2 million coins during the 1890s, with some expected variation from year to year and a few outliers. The 1897-S claims an unremarkable production total of 1.4 million pieces, but this fails to accurately illustrate the rarity of examples in this lofty grade. An examination of the NGC Census Report reveals only 18 coins graded MS65 and just a single representative finer (12/14).
Vivid orange-gold coloration and frosty mint luster embrace each side and generate significant visual appeal. The stars show full centers and Liberty's hair is strongly detailed. A few areas of light russet and violet toning are confined to the the lower obverse, and singularly distracting impairments are essentially non-existent.(Registry values: N4719)
