Description
1897-S Double Eagle, MS65
Major Condition Rarity
1897-S $20 MS65 PCGS. The 1897-S double eagle follows a
similar pattern to the 1896, being deceptively available in middle
to lower grades, but significantly rare in Gem or finer condition.
PCGS records only nine representatives at the MS65 level, with just
two pieces numerically finer; NGC has seen 18 coins in this grade,
but with just one numerically finer (3/15). The Smithsonian
contains eight 1897-S twenties, the finest of which grades just
MS63, per Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth. This Gem representative shows
satiny yellow-gold luster with subtle peach and honey overtones.
The strike is bold and only a few trivial grazes are observed upon
close examination.(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26CJ, PCGS# 9032, Greysheet# 9958)
