1897-S $20 MS65+ PCGS. This splendid, high-end Gem Uncirculated 1897-S ranks among the most important condition rarities of the Liberty double eagle series. PCGS has certified 15,000 examples of this San Francisco issue, but only two pieces graded MS65+, and two examples certified as MS67 (1/25). NGC reports one MS65+ piece plus one finer example that is graded MS66. Very few grade-limiting marks are evident on each side of this smooth and attractive twenty dollar gold. Brilliant rose-gold luster emanates from the frosty surfaces. An essentially full strike exists throughout the raised elements, while the eye appeal could hardly be more impressive. In short, every aspect of this imposing double eagle is first-rate and well worth a strong bid.
