Description

1897-S Double Eagle, MS65
Only Four Finer at PCGS

1897-S $20 MS65 PCGS. Gleaming cartwheel luster coats evenly-toned yellow-gold surfaces. A thorough examination with a loupe turns up insufficient evidence of striking weakness on either side. The clusters of abrasions that define the typical double eagle are virtually absent, especially in the all-important left obverse field, with just a few one-off marks here and there. The story of the 1897-S is the same as many of the double eagle issues of the 1890s: many were exported, leading to a preponderance in AU and low Mint State grades and heavy bagmarks being the norm. This example is a welcome exception to that rule, and few can be found in a finer state of preservation. Population: 18 in 65 (2 in 65+), 2 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N4719)
