    Near-Gem 1898 Double Eagle
    Lustrous Condition Rarity

1898 $20 MS64 NGC. The 1898 generally is counted as an "in-between" issue, neither generously nor parsimoniously minted, but it does have a significant quirk for the high-end collector: neither NGC nor PCGS has graded a Gem business strike example (3/13). A near-Gem will have to do, then, and discerning collectors could do far worse than this Choice example. Bold, swirling yellow-orange luster appears downright rosy at certain angles, while an olive-accented coppery area is noted on Liberty's cheek. Small luster scrapes are scattered on each side, while the obverse rim has a few digs below the date.
