Description

Exquisite 1902 Double Eagle, MS64

1902 $20 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The 1902 is one of the lowest-mintage double eagles (31,140 circulation strikes) of the 20th century. It is the rarest Liberty Head twenty struck in that century in terms of its overall rarity, and when found is usually in grades ranging from AU to lower Mint State. MS64 and finer examples are extremely rare.
This near-Gem is virtually fully struck, unusual for this issue that is often seen weak on the stars, hair strands, and eagle's plumage. Both sides have exquisite surfaces with frosty yellow-gold luster, displaying occasional splashes of faint of orange patina. A few light, relatively unobtrusive marks preclude Gem classification. Population: 8 in 64, 1 finer (1/10).
