Description

1902-S Double Eagle, MS64+
Only Six Coins Numerically Finer

1902-S $20 MS64+ PCGS. The 1902-S follows the general pattern of most Type Three San Francisco double eagle issues, being struck in substantial numbers (in this case, more than 1.7 million coins), with a significant quantity exported to Europe and South America. A number of these have found their way back to the numismatic marketplace in recent decades, with the result that the date is readily obtainable in grades through MS63. Choice examples are distinctly scarce, however, as most of the exported coins acquired moderate abrasions before returning to collector hands. Likewise, Gems are prohibitively rare.

This Plus-graded MS64 coin displays frosty green-gold luster around the margins, with deeper apricot hues in the centers. The strike is bold and only a few minute ticks on Liberty's cheek preclude a full Gem grade assessment from PCGS. Population: 69 in 64 (7 in 64+), 4 finer (10/14).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26CV, PCGS# 9042, Greysheet# 9963)
