Description

1903-S Double Eagle, MS65
Among the Finest Certified

1903-S $20 MS65 PCGS. Except for a few Gem examples, the 1903-S double eagle survives in Mint State thanks to overseas holdings that have since returned to U.S. shores. The few high-grade pieces that exist in MS65 or finer grades were likely obtained by purchase directly from the Mint in 1903, or by some other fortunate happenstance despite the substantial 954,000-piece mintage. This sharply struck example is tied with about two dozen other MS65 coins as the finest-certified at PCGS. Aside from a bit of grayish grime on the cheek and a few light abrasions in that area, only nominal pinprick marks exist on the otherwise smooth, unabraded fields. Rich orange-gold color alternates with yellow-gold highlights throughout the vibrantly lustrous surfaces. Eye appeal is abundant. PCGS Population: 24 in 65, 0 finer (1/25).(Registry values: N4719)
