1904 $20 MS65 ★ NGC. CAC. The 1904 is the most common date of the Liberty Head double eagle series, evidenced by the tens of thousands certified by NGC and PCGS. In fact, the two services have graded nearly 10,000 coins in MS65 alone! The present Gem ranks near the top of this voluminous figure as it has been given not only the CAC green label, but is also one of just 14 specimens assigned NGC's coveted Star. That designation has been given to only two numerically higher '04 twenties (9/09).
Variegated apricot-gold and mint-green patina embraces both sides of this magnificent specimen, each of which is awash with ebullient luster. An exacting strike complements these attributes by delivering crisp definition to the design features. A few grade-consistent marks on Liberty's cheek are undisturbing, and mentioned only because they might help pedigree the coin.(Registry values: N2998)
