Description
Exceptional 1906 Gem Twenty Dollar
1906 $20 MS65 PCGS. The 1906 double eagle, with a mintage of 69,596 circulation strikes, can be located in the lower Mint State grades without too much trouble. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) intimate that most of the examples offered in recent decades have been found in gold shipments from Europe.Select and near-Gem pieces are scarce and higher-grade coins are elusive. Inspection of PCGS and NGC population data indicate that a mere 13 1906 twenties are graded MS65, and only two examples finer.
Radiant luster endows both sides of this magnificent Gem offering, as does the melange of peach-gold, mint-green, and lilac coloration. A well executed strike imparts sharp detail to the design elements, including the lower obverse and upper reverse denticles, areas that are sometimes weak. Unlike most 1906 double eagles that are heavily marked, both sides of this example are very well preserved. Overall, this piece displays imposing eye appeal, something that Michael Fuljenz and Douglas Winter (1999) say is "below average" on most '06 specimens. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 8 in 65, 1 finer (8/09).(Registry values: N4719)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26D4, PCGS# 9049, Greysheet# 9841)
