Description
1900-S Double Eagle, MS65
Only Two Finer Pieces Known
1900-S $20 MS65 NGC. The 1900-S Liberty double eagle is a
popular turn-of-the-century date with a substantial mintage of more
than 2.4 million pieces. Despite its hefty production and a
reputation for sharp strikes and frosty luster, the issue is only
plentiful through MS63 due to frequent abrasions and heavy marks.
While Choice examples can be located with persistence and patience,
Gems are genuine condition rarities, with NGC and PCGS reporting a
total of only 14 such pieces in MS65 as of (5/26). The two finer
examples are both at NGC: The ex-Eliasberg coin, and the Akers
plate coin from the Dallas Bank collection. This colorful San Francisco Gem displays an extra-sharp strike and bold, frosty luster over rich, orange-gold surfaces. Lemon-gold accents cartwheel luster for exceptional eye appeal. Minor abrasions are consistent with the grade but none are individually bothersome. With the expectation that no finer pieces will be available in the near future, this is an important opportunity for gold specialists and double eagle collectors of every persuasion. NGC Census: 7 in 65, 2 finer (5/26).
