Description

1859 Liberty Double Eagle, AU55
Low-Mintage Type One Issue

1859 $20 AU55 PCGS. Repunched Date, Breen-7195. Largely absent from shipwreck finds and seemingly ignored by early collectors, the 1859 is not only a low-mintage issue (just 43,597 pieces struck), but it is one of the three scarcest Type One double eagles from the Philadelphia Mint (excluding the ultra-rare 1861 Paquet reverse). Most survivors exist in VF to XF condition, with occasional About Uncirculated examples seen at auction. This Choice AU specimen represents one of the top levels of availability, since fully Mint State coins are important rarities.

Wheat-gold surfaces show signs of limited circulation and moderate high-point wear. The date is notably repunched, with a disembodied segment above 1 and the upper curve of 8 narrowly recut. Light abrasions and marks pepper the surfaces, which at one time were partially reflective. The reverse is rotated about 15° clockwise. Soft mint luster accompanies a bold strike. Population: 18 in 55, 24 finer (10/19).(Registry values: N2998)
