    Description

    Unusually Nice 1859-O Twenty, AU50

1859-O $20 AU50 NGC. Described by Doug Winter as "the fourth rarest New Orleans double eagle ... ." Combining NGC and PCGS population data reveals that the 1859-O twenty is indeed tied with the 1860-O as the fourth lowest in terms of population, inclusive of all grades. Treasure recovered from the S.S. Republic added two 1859-O double eagles to the NGC Census Report, with both pieces grading AU58. The Republic sank in October 1865 with a reported $400,000 of specie, mostly in the form of ten and twenty dollar gold pieces. The fact that only two 1859-O double eagles were recovered from the wreckage in 2003 reiterates the rarity of this issue.
This example is one of the latest die states observed. On the obverse, we note heavy clash marks, with bold remnants of the reverse's shield and glory rays present where Liberty's face meets her hair. The tips of two additional rays protrude from her throat. On the reverse attention is first drawn to a sizable die break extending from the rim through the left stand of E in UNITED and terminating at the tip of the eagle's right wing. Minor clash marks are visible in the field between the glory rays and the eagle.
In terms of eye appeal, the current offering is above average. Most 1859-O double eagle survivors are heavily abraded. And, although the assigned technical grade is accurate, the abrasions observed on this twenty are unusually subdued and not the least bit obtrusive. Semiprooflikeness in the protected areas and a firm strike add to the charm of this special coin. Census: 9 in 50, 34 finer (11/08).
