Description

1865 Liberty Twenty, AU53
Final P-Mint Type One Issue

1865 $20 AU53 PCGS. Sharply struck with a minimum of actual wear, this 1865 double eagle only slight signs of brief circulation, with mint grime on the high points and the accompanying scattered field chatter. Much luster remains on each side over attractive, rich-gold surfaces. Most AU or finer examples come from the S.S. Republic shipwreck, although this naturally patinated twenty does not have the "look" of a seawater coin. More likely, it is a coin that saw domestic circulation or was used for European trade.(Registry values: N1793)
