Description
1870-S Double Eagle, MS62
Popular Date-Mintmark Combination
1870-S $20 MS62 PCGS. Small Squat S. The unique 1870-S half
dime, the rare 1870-S Seated dollar, and the unique 1870-S three
dollar gold piece certainly contribute to the popularity of this
date-mintmark combination for all denominations. In the case of the
1870-S double eagle, a healthy mintage of 920,000 coins was
accomplished. However, the issue is conditionally scarce in MS62
and practically unavailable any higher with just two coins each
graded better at PCGS and NGC. The present example showcases frosty
rose and khaki-gold surfaces scattered with small bagmarks.
Well-detailed for the type. Population: 16 in 62 (2 in 62+), 2
finer (11/21).From The 4L Collection. (Registry values: N4719)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26A9, PCGS# 8959, Greysheet# 9912)
