    1871-CC Double Eagle, AU Details
    Partially Reflective Fields

1871-CC $20 -- Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Variety 1-A. The 1871-CC is often referred to as "the other Carson City key" in the Liberty double eagle series, behind of course the legendary 1870-CC. Garrett and Guth write in their gold Encyclopedia: "The mintage is small, and most of the production was destined for circulation in Nevada and the surrounding areas. ... most of the coins found of this issue are well worn and heavily bagmarked." Even the certified population figures plummet in the AU grades, and the date is extremely rare in Uncirculated condition.

This AU-level coin shows some repair work in the fields, but scattered abrasions make it well-hidden. Bright yellow-gold luster retains some reflectivity in the protected regions of the borders, and the devices are boldly detailed. This piece will fit in well with an AU-level Carson City double eagle collection.
