    1879-CC Liberty Double Eagle, XF45
    Elusive Branch Mint Twenty

1879-CC $20 XF45 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The 1879-CC Liberty double eagle is an elusive issue, from a small mintage of 10,708 pieces. Traditionally, the 1879-CC was thought to be even more elusive than it is today, but a small hoard of examples surfaced in the 1990's, to augment the meager supply. Most of the hoard coins were in the XF-AU grade range, so the issue remains quite rare in Mint State.

The present coin is an impressive Choice AU specimen, with strongly impressed design elements that show no sign of lapping. A small die lump, which is seen on many examples of this issue, is evident below the 9 in the date. Some minor wear shows on the prongs of the crown and hair, but most interior detail remains intact. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded and retain traces of original mint luster. The overall presentation is most attractive.
