Description
1885-S Liberty Twenty, MS64+
Only Two Finer Coins at PCGS
1885-S $20 MS64+ PCGS. The 1885-S Liberty double eagle
claims a substantial mintage of 683,500 pieces, but few
high-quality examples were saved by contemporary collectors. Most
of the coins circulated heavily in the regional economy, or were
used in foreign exchange, where rough shipping and storage resulted
in considerable attrition. As a result, the issue is reasonably
available in circulated and lower Mint State grades today, but
high-grade examples are quite rare. This Plus-graded Choice specimen offers sharply detailed design elements and vivid orange-gold surfaces that radiate vibrant mint luster and show only minor signs of contact. Overall eye appeal is terrific. Population: 35 in 64 (1 in 64+), 2 finer (2/16).(Registry values: N4719)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26BP, PCGS# 9005, GSID# 9942)
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
Weight: 33.44 grams
AGW: 0.9675oz
Mintage: 683,500
