    1891-CC Liberty Double Eagle, XF40
    Highly Sought, Low-Mintage Issue

1891-CC $20 XF40 PCGS. Variety 1-A. A surprising amount of mint luster survives on this scarce Carson City twenty for the assigned grade, with smooth and pleasing surfaces plus sharp definition on the devices throughout. Mellow, fawn-gold color covers the obverse, while the reverse displays a lively greenish-gold patina.

Just 5,000 pieces were struck of the issue -- the lowest CC-Mint production of any double eagle except for the legendary 1870-CC. Marks are few and far between on the obverse, with minor reeding marks opposite Liberty's forehead and between stars 7 and 8, plus a shallow abrasion to the right of the date. No other marks of consequence disturb the fields or devices on either side of the coin. Housed in an old green label holder. The quality and eye appeal suggest an even finer grade by today's standards.
